Six perspectives to explore

Time for a new update on our development progress! Last time we showed you concept art from the caves, now we already have playtesters exploring it in the game.

Snake going vertical! What's up there?
It's thrilling to see people enjoying the various transformation forms. There's a lot of variety on how to play the game depending which character is active. It's like playing the game from six perspectives, with each form offering awesome possibilities. Plus imagine what happens when you switch them on the fly that's so many ways to beat the game and discover secrets!

Lion-Man is strong and fast - is he the right choice to pass the volcano ?
The Frog is one of our favorite characters as his tongue is magical! You'll be surprised what he can do with it! But for now we just need him for a lengthy and dangerous underwater section. No need for additional oxygen!

Frog-Man is a great swimmer, he can overcome lengthy underwater passages without oxygen.

We still have new ideas coming everyday and it seems we need 10 Monster Boy games to realize all that...
The sky is the limit! Dragon-Man is the last playable form. This image is from the intro.

Lastly we'd like to thank everybody who sent us encouraging feedback by email or in the blog! It's pushing us to keep working hard and we love you for that! Please stay tuned ^_^

Logbomb on :

That shot of the caves looks amazing :-)

FDG, Thomas on :

Thanks, Logbomb! :-)

Ghost_Messiah on :

Amazing and beautiful screenshots! The game looks wonderful! So excited for Monster Boy. Release date soon?

FDG, Thomas on :

Thanks so much! We don't dare to announce a release date before we submitted to Sony and Microsoft and it went successfully through their QA. Only then we can announce a rock solid date. We roughly plan to finish main production in 2 months and submit afterwards. Please keep your fingers crossed that the rest of the development goes smooth :-)

Twinder on :

This really looks great - the Wonder Boy 3 influence is very clear here and I couldn't be happier about that. I've got nothing but fond memories of that game from my childhood and can't wait to dive back into that world. I haven't been into 2D platformers for many years but this one is a must-buy for me.

Any chance of another music sample post? I loved the last one! I hope this game is full of new versions of old Wonder Boy songs.

FDG, Thomas on :

Thanks a lot! Glad to hear you like what you see so far. That's a good idea - I'll probably post a new music demo next time :-)

Kafei Keaton on :

So hyped for this game! No game at E3 will get me excited as this!

FDG, Thomas on :

Thank you Kafei! We tried to convince Sony to show Monster Boy on their E3 booth but right now it's all VR as it seems. We'll see - they have a demo from us just in case.

Spidey981 on :

Good evening, thank you for these new screenshot, the one with the Dragon Man is great. It will be my wallpaper for my pc. We all hope a release date soon. Deeply late July

Goati on :

I love you.
Haven't commented before, but I want you to know that I've never been excited for a game to come out like this one. I consume Megadrive games as my number one passion, so you can imagine.
I've been visiting this blog with religious constance, and I can already tell your game has 0% chances of disappointing me.
I am expecially looking forward to the soundtrack. An eargasm is guaranteed there, with those guys and gals.

One question though, does it release on PS4 only at first?

FDG, Thomas on :

Thanks a lot, Goati! We love playing Mega Drive, too - just recently I plugged my NOMAD on the TV and played some of the classics. Many are as much fun today as they where 20 years ago! Makes me think someone has to remake Phantasy Star 4 ! :-)

About your question: We release on both PS4 and Xbox One simultaneously.

MonsterWorldFan on :

About the music... Will the composers arrange these 2 songs? They're like ''motifs'' of the series, they shouldn't be ommited:

FDG, Thomas on :

Yes, Monster Boy has both tracks :-)

Maybe Dick on :

Looking fantastic!

FDG, Thomas on :

Glad to read that, thanks a lot!

Sergio on :

Wow, awesome level design, can't wait to play it!!! I would encourage you to work more hours so as to release it sooner, but it seems you are doing so from the things you show us!!! Awesome, awesome!!!

FDG, Thomas on :

Haha, thanks Sergio. I can confirm everyone here working hard and loving this project ! :-)

Cinossu on :

10 Monster Boy games? I certainly wouldn't say no. :-)

It all sounds and looks amazing so far. Very much looking forward to this.

FDG, Thomas on :

Thank you so much! :-)

Rez on :

I Want it for PLAYSTATION VITA!!!!!!!

Spidey981 on :

Hello, I have already asked the question but it's possible to have a playable demo? just 15-20 minutes to discover this wonderful world, try the main character some weapons and gear, enemy etc.... There is still 4 months before the release date ,is too long. Please please please. the game should be released Q3 / Q4 2015 and Q1 2016 and now end of Q3. I know you work hard but a little demo we'll wait. thank you for taking my request into consideration. addition it will be able to allow full player to discover the game and attract curiosity to see it on the ps4 and xone store

FDG, Thomas on :

I really appreciate your interest in the demo but we don't plan to offer it as public demo as it's still incomplete and would spoil the full game experience when the game is finished.

James Revolti on :

10 Monster Boy games?

FDG, Thomas on :

Yes, +9 if it does well! Fingers crossed :-)

user on :

hi sorry for the stupid question but this game is coming to pc (steam)

FDG, Thomas on :

Yes, Monster Boy will also come to Steam!

jj on :

Love unique design & colors of armour and weapons.
Saw German demo. Can't wait to explore and discover the secrets in Cursed Kingdom. Music is brilliant. :-D
Glad you have so many ideas for future Monster Boy title, I hope there are many to come.

FDG, Thomas on :

Thank you JJ! Glad to hear you like the demo footage and music. We've put a lot of effort into music production as we believe it's a very important part of the experience. Also, we have many cool re-arranges to enjoy.

Roberto on :

So extremely pumped for this. Day one purchase for me. I'd buy it right now if I could! Keep up the great work! This is a dream come true!

FDG, Thomas on :

Thanks a lot, Roberto!

LDigital on :

You wait a whole lifetime for a new wonderboy game and then two come at once!
Any thoughts on this? I can't wait to play both now

FDG, Thomas on :

Such an awesome time! Now we have a remake of one of our most beloved Wonder Boy games and an all-new one coming with Monster Boy. It's great to be able to play another game we didn't participate developing. That way I also get to enjoy something new! :-)

? 17 on :

Looking good.

Just wondering if there a chance this could also be ported to XBox 360, PS3, Wii & PSP?

Is there chance of a physical version of this with a collecters edition.

Will there be a playable moster girl character in this game with the same animal transformations as Monster Boy.
You could get WayForwards Shantae or Nega-Shantae to be a guest playable character(s) in the game as they both can dance into animals.
Any elements from Monster World IV in this game?

I hope there a wizard of booze in this game.

FDG, Thomas on :

We're hoping to release a physical LE version for PS4 but that'd happen after the digital release of the game. Chances are good we also work on a Vita digital/physical version if the game is doing well enough. Fingers crossed! ;-)

We won't have any Wayforward character in the game but you'll meet a creature from MWIV

Edenr on :

Finger crossed for Vita version! I'm not interested for home console. Thanks

Spidey981 on :

Hello all, I have some questions.
How much to sell hoped game for a sequel?
Is a version box is planned?
Will there be DLC few months after the release? (New quests ...)
If we do all the quests, get all the trophies and finish the game 100% how it takes time about to finish the game?

Thank you for taking time to answer questions of all fans

FDG, Thomas on :

We're not planning a DLC for Monster Boy, it will be a single purchase content complete experience. We haven't implemented trophies yet - right now we're finishing all features and levels, hide some secrets and then implement the trophies next month. If you play first time with normal difficulty you'll play around 10+ hours. We have implemented good shortcuts so you can reach every far end of the world quite quickly. As for sale numbers: Between 100K-200K units would certainly allow us to continue the series. We'd love to see it as a beginning of many cool new Wonder Boy games coming in the future.

Hakek on :

Can't wait till this is out! keep up the good work guys :-)

Will there be any pre-order deals closer to release?
Eg: free soundtrack, theme for the PS4 and XBox or option to play in retro graphics

Any chance of making a discount bundle deal if we plan to buy for more than one system? If so, I would get it on the PC and PS4

FDG, Thomas on :

Some good questions, Hakek. We can't offer a cross-buy sale bundle that would work automatically but the idea good. As for pre-order gift, we're looking into it!

José Maturana on :

This game looks amazing. I can't believe we are going to have both spiritual sequels and a remake. And both of them looks gorgeous.

I'm so happy right now! But I have a question. Will it have the same release date on PC and consoles? It would be amazing we PC players don't have to wait, like many other releases...

Thank you so much, take the time you need to do this and keep up the good work.

WonderBoy III was the very first game I played in my life. You are making this a dream come true for me.

Have a nice day ^^

FDG, Thomas on :

Thanks a lot José! We'll begin with the PC version when Console versions made it through QA - then, depending on how far in the future we can release it the PC version will follow quickly or even the same time. No promises right now, though.

Tom on :

Yes please. 10 more Wonder/Monsterboy games, would work for me :-) Keep up the good work team! Great to hear about the progress, as always.

Tom on :

Also, just a thought but I was wondering if the hidden doors, from Dragon's Trap, will be making a comeback? They were such an interesting hidden feature of WB3, I really hope so.

FDG, Thomas on :

We'll have several secrets in the game but the PIG and it's snout is very powerful so it will sniff out hidden things quite quickly. Just remember switching to Pig-man when you see something suspicious ;-)

Gordman on :

Wow, soooo beautiful screenshots! I love shop buildings and marketplaces in video games, I love virtual shopping! xD

The game must be filled with 1000 secrets, it gives the game a huge replay value because it must be impossible to find all secrets in one run.

The Bat looks great, if you plan to include more ghosts, you should keep that glowing style.

"The Frog is one of our favorite characters as his tongue is magical! You'll be surprised what he can do with it!" - No comment lol :-D Joking aside, the Frogman really must be one of the coolest transformations.

The last screen looks very impressive. Damn, I wish there would be more developers like you making games like these. Our world is overflued with too much brutal and senseless games, so many thanks to you guys and girls for creating this gem!

FDG, Thomas on :

Thank you very much for the kind words, Gordman! I couldn't agree more - we need to have more such colorful games and luckily there's 2 Wonder Boy games on the horizon. We'll also play the new Shantae game for sure :-)

Zell on :

I'd like to have a theme of this game for my PS4? Can't we have it anytime soon before the release? you can consider it as Ads for this game.

FDG, Thomas on :

We'd love to share a lot more than just a theme on PS4 but the whole team is busy completing the game and that has to come first so we all can play the game as soon as possible :-)

Spidey981 on :

Hello, you'll be present at the Los Angeles E3 and Gamescom in Köln to present Monster Boy to the world?

Zell on :

I had thought of this yesterday, it would have been nice if they present it so the world would know about this game.

FDG, Thomas on :

We're hoping to be able to show it either with Microsoft or Sony on any of the upcoming shows. We had our demo builds running on console a bit too late (too close to E3) so we couldn't get a slot. We tried to get a place at PAX but it was sold out long ago - seems to be pretty tough to get a place there when you don't plan a year in advance. Anyway - we'll keep looking for opportunities and hope for some booth space at Sony or Microsoft.

Zell on :

I am wondering and I have a question which I know its way ahead of it time to ask such one, but let me ask.

For your next release of this game (crossing my fingers) is the plan ganna be once per 2 years? Any plan?

I believe you can understand why I have asked such a question as I have given up previously that such a game would have a sequel.

I dont want this game to be the last sequel.

Thanks guys for your efforts.

FDG, Thomas on :

We'd absolutely love to make a sequel but it totally depends on our financials after releasing Monster Boy. We hope to sell a good amount of copies so we can keep on making Monster Boy games. Please keep your fingers crossed!

Todd Gaspard on :

Hey !!! if you guys are doing a physical copy I'll probably get it despite me buying the digital version the second it hits PSN. I'll double dip, for sure.

Oh, also, do you guys have a Facebook Page? I can't find one, You could reach even more people with it. Please make one if not! IF You have a page can you direct me?

I love monster boy, I have them all on WiiU. I even got them on PSN. Believe it or not, I am more excited about this than any Triple A title announced this year.It looks like it will surpass them in almost every way

FDG, Thomas on :

Hi Todd, thanks a lot for your kind words! :-) We don't have a specific Monster Boy Facebook page yet..really should do that. For now we share Monster Boy news on our FDG Facebook page for all our games (mobile and console) at

Robin on :

Cant wait any more! Waiting for this more then any other game!

FDG, Thomas on :

Thanks a lot !

locomotive on :

Physical copy

that would be nice i will buy a ps or xbox
for this game yust to play this
Loved the dragons trap
thid one look yust as good even better
whe need more 2d games back on those new consoles

FDG, Thomas on :

Thanks so much, locomotive! I'll have to tell Sony and Microsoft that we have a system seller here for Wonder Boy fans ^_^ - let's hope they support our release properly. Fingers crossed!

MajorWeirdo on :

This looks great!! Genius work FDG !

I can't believe Sony won't accept this :-D

FDG, Thomas on :

Nowadays there's a Tsunami of games coming every year, so they often wait for Metacritic and ratings before taking action or offering support. After all it's our first console title so I understand they're all a bit skeptical. Nevertheless - we're quite confident that the finished game will be well received. We'll give our best!

Vague Rant on :

I hope this does well enough for you that you're able to port it to further platforms. It's looking fantastic, but I don't own a PS4 or Xbox One, or even a decent PC, so I live in hope of a runaway hit allowing you to bring this to more devices. 3DS alone would satisfy me, but I'm sure Wii U (or NX?) and Vita owners would love to play, too.

FDG, Thomas on :

We recently received our WiiU Devkit and it looks like we'll make a port for this console, too. However - the focus is still on PS4 and Xbox One first - moving forward from there to PC and more. PS Vita is high on our secondary list, too.

Justin Greenberg on :

I've been looking forward to this game since Wonder Boy in Monster World. Can't wait!

FDG, Thomas on :

Thanks a lot Justin!

Handled on :

Thank you for Ps Vita interest! I ll buy only this version. I love only portable consoles

FDG, Thomas on :

That's cool for us! We have to put out a Vita version then.
I'm curious: What was your last Vita game you bought ? Any favorites in Action Platformer genre? Shovel Knight?

Mark on :

I'm a portable gamer too. NX/Vita would be great. I own 100+ physical Vita games and 40+ digitial games. My latest games are Odin Sphere, Galgun and Shiren the Wanderer.

DerIgel on :

Hi! The game looks nice, but I feel, something is not quite right... There is some potential to unleash, else it won't be a good game. I think you really need more playtesters to prevent this from happening.

Don't worry, I won't let you down! Send me a copy and I help to ensure, you will deliver a great game.

No need to thank me :-)

FDG, Thomas on :

Hi 'Der Igel',

Thank you for offering your help here but at this time we are not planning to send out copies of the beta to the public. However, please note that all you see here is still 'work in progress' material. We also have 20 playtesters checking the game so we hope to be able to release a great and enjoyable game. ^^

Wonder Boy Fan on :

Hello, I know that the game will be translated into French, German, Spanish etc ... but is it the name of weapons and gear will also be translated? as well as the main title? thank you

FDG, Thomas on :

We don't plan to translate the main title but Inventory and other texts will be fully translated.

Handled on :

My last game for Ps Vita is Odin Sphere. I love this genre! My first love for vodeogames was born with Wonder Boy in Monster Land... I love Wonder Boy saga and i ll buy you Monster Boy at day One! If Vita port will be released of course. Thanks

FDG, Thomas on :

Cool, thanks for sharing! I never played Odin Sphere but it looks interesting. I discovered my love for side scrolling Action Adventure games on Famicom and Master System. Next to Metroid on NES it was really the Monster World Series that blew my mind. I played lots of games in the genre and enjoyed them like Lord of the Sword, Popful Mail, Castlevania. Also Top Down like Ys, Final Fantasy Adventure etc. From the modern games I loved Dust an Elysian Tail and Ori. I guess all those games influence me in a way and I didn't mention many other games. Love good and direct action, responsive controls and good music while playing. :-)

Hugh on :

I am replaying the original wonder boys in anticipation for this game. Can't wait to play it!

Hakek on :

Hey guys, I know you're all hard at work trying to get this game out the door, but any new updates, pictures or behind the scenes documentary you can share?

Any chance of having action figures for the game?

FDG, Thomas on :

Sorry to keep y'all waiting with blog updates. Action Figures would be cool! We don't have anything in the works in that regard though but a good idea ^^ Meanwhile you could also check our new facebook page

Spidey981 on :

Hello everyone

Thank you for having created a Facebook page, it's really cool to have a picture with all the characters and the hero's picture with his intense gaze is really GREAT. Can you we have photos larger on the official site? Only flaw I prefer the former police major title. But that's just my opinion, I hope with all my heart to have a release date soon. Thank you

FDG, Thomas on :

Thanks for your feedback, Spidey! We're going to post a bigger version of the artwork in one way or another soon. :-)

Neddy on :

Wow! This game looks amazing, so beautiful, love the art.
The only bad thing is I saw the trailer video buy chance on YouTube, this game needs to be advertised more, it's definitely a purchase from me.
You guys have captured the feel of the classics, great job!

FDG, Thomas on :

Thanks a lot Neddy! Yes we need more advertising. In fact - we need to begin doing it! :-D Don't worry we're at it. It just didn't make sense to spend much on PR without having a release date yet and with the game still months away. Expect our first PR activities next month towards Gamescom 2016.

Zell on :

Ayyy, so it is still months from now? and I was logging every now and then to see a release date in Aug.

Well, I hope the next series won't take much time to release since you have most of the design available to be reused. Yes yes yes, I am having a high expectation that you would release another series after that. At least I don't want to lose hope.

I'm waiting for the Pre-order if it is going to be available :-)

Wonder Boy Fan on :

hello, in one of your message of June 1, you say that the production will be finished in about two months. about the end of July. can you tell us approximately how many percent, 80, 90 or 99%? After Gamescom we will have a playable demo to wait for the release date in January 2017 under the official Facebook page. thank you

FDG, Thomas on :

Hi WB Fan, thanks for your message!

The production looks like this:

- Finish Game Production
- Port to Release Platforms
- QA stage Sony/Microsoft
- Agree with both Sony/Microsoft on release date
- Release.

Lots of unknowns for us e.g. because we don't know how fast we pass TRC (Console QA). We ended up heading into November release which was not recommended by Sony/MS so we launch in January 2017. Game is 90% finished but we keep adding some new ideas until August before we feature freeze because of the extended time towards January.

The demo will only be playable on Gamescom, it's not for download unfortunately. Anyway - we also release a new trailer soon! Hope you like it.

Wonder Boy Fan on :

Thank you for your reply so quickly. I'm a little sad that the release date is still pushed back to January, but it's not your fault. You follow the advice of Sony and Microsoft. Like many fans I'm looking forward to playing there. I hope to have more news at Gamescom and I am excited to see the new trailer and new atrwork with all the characters. Good luck to Game Atelier and FDG for the 10%, you made an amazing job. I will not abuse but is it possible to have some trophy name to unlock (No Spoil) and the total number of trophies. thank you very much

FDG, Thomas on :

Thank you! Unfortunately I have no trophy details to share yet, sorry!

Alex Khayrullin on :

"it seems we need 10 Monster Boy games to realize all that"

Here's to hoping you'll do just that :-) . Seriously though, what's the team's and Ryuichi Nishizawa's opinion on possible sequels? Is this a definite return of the Wonder Boy/Monster World series or simply an one-off game?

The game looks amazing.

FDG, Thomas on :

It all depends on the success of Monster Boy - fingers crossed ! We'd love to continue the series, if enough players show interest and like it.

Jonas Lönnqvist on :

Game look really amazing! Doesn't matter if it's not released til Q4. Have so many games to catch up with anyway :-) Can't wait to play this one though. Playing through Wonder boy in Monster world for the second time now to get in the e for this one. Keep up the good work!

FDG, Thomas on :

Thanks a lot, Jonas! That's certainly a good training :-)

Spidey981 on :

hello, FDG is a German editor and you will be in Köln for Gamescom. Game Atelier is a French development studio. Will you be at the Paris Games Week? I hope very strong. I live near Paris and I would really try Monster Boy.

FDG, Thomas on :

Yes, we're also at Paris Games Week! Cu there!

Spidey981 on :

This is great news. I am looking forward to trying it. thank you

FDG, Thomas on :

We're looking forward to meet you there!

Wonder Boy gamer on :

I have been watching, reading, praying for it to come faster, and now to a point of tears dying for this game to come! I have actually randomly scanned search engines since before your making of this game because I love Wonder Boy so much. I really want to thank you for reviving one of the best childhood games I remember. I hope for many more to come in the future. Keep up the great work and hurry up! ha ha...your keeping us on the edge of our seats for this game to be released!

FDG, Thomas on :

Thanks a lot! New trailer will be released soon with a bit of new gameplay material. Hope you like it!

fuzzydrainage on :

Thank you, FDG for picking up this wonderful game project. I spoke with Ryuichi-san from Westone on Twitter a while back, and I was truly honored for that brief encounter. He was one of my heroes as a child for many of the same reasons as most of these commentators. I'm actually currently working towards my BS in Game Design because of his inspiration (please let him know that, if possible).

If you could find the time to respond (either here or at my email:, are there going to be other platform releases other than Playstation 4? I would love to see it on PS3 or psvita/pstv. Even Steam would be great, although I don't use it since my computer is for working. Plus, I love my Sony controllers for games.

FDG, Thomas on :

Hi Fuzzy welcome to the Party! Thank you for sharing your story with us - I'll let Nishizawa-San know about that. He's always very happy when he hears of people who got inspired by his work. Please stay tuned about further ports of the game we certainly release on Steam too and Vita is a possibility as well. That depends on good sales though - fingers crossed! ^_^

fuzzy drainage on :

Right, I meant to type "Nishizawa-san," but I've been quite haggard for a few weeks now due to school and life in general. I tend to forget the finer points of the Japanese language as well as any other language that I didn't grow up with, but I'm learning... slowly.

Anyways, thank you all for being fantastic and reviving a project that has been long overdue in the minds of many. Yesterday, I was speaking with the manager of the local video game store. He was overjoyed when I told him about this exact progress update. You guys aren't just reviving Wonder Boy. You're reviving hope for a lot of gamers who have been waiting 20+ years for this! Your fans have patience, so please take your time and get this right.

FDG, Thomas on :

No problem, Fuzzy. I'm getting all confused about Japanese naming often enough myself ;-) Thanks again for joining us here and your kind words. Makes us really happy to hear from Wonder Boy fans who are eager to play Monster Boy. ^^

Spidey981 on :

Hello, I was wondering what the classification of the game? My son soon to 2 years, it is still too young to play but I wonder if the game will pegi 3 or 7. thank you

FDG, Thomas on :

Hi Spidey, only problem with Monster Boy is we have a drinker in the game who consumes wine (alcohol) and the pig smokes tobacco in the IDLE scene. That alone will be the biggest reason for higher classification :-) Otherwise you don't have to worry the game is colorful and more fun oriented than anything. :-)

Spidey981 on :

Thank you Thomas. Monster boy will surely be classified pegi 7 because of alcohol and tobacco but my son can still play when he is 3 years. In any case he can still watch me play. There is already a fan of the games because he likes watching the Christmas trailer and he knows the six transformations of the hero. :-). Thank you for the clarification
