Please visit the PlayStation blog on March 4!

Dear Monster Boy followers, fans and interested gamers - sorry for the silence!
We're crunching and working hard to finish the game. While we get closer to the finishing line, there's still a lot to do, so please don't expect a release in the first half of 2016. Since we're going to release the game simultanously on PS4 and Xbox One - we need an additional buffer for the release window on top of the porting work.

Someone told Pig-Man the finishing line is on the left, now he really wants to get there quickly!

Y'all know that creating a game is only one side of the medal - we also need to get some buzz and work on the marketing side. On March 4, we'll have our first blog post on the official Sony Playstation Blog! It's the first time we're introducing the game to a general audience of players and we hope there's some good feedback. Please support us and do some noise! ^_^

About Platforms
We hear you loud and clear! There's PS Vita, WiiU and even more. We totally agree that these platforms need to get Monster Boy, too! We love Nintendo! However, it's impossible for us to work on all portings at the same time. Also, the game needs to sell well enough so we're able to finance the porting work as it can be very time consuming. Since we don't have any guarantee for success, we just can't announce additional platforms at the moment.

I don't own a Ps4 or Xbox. I love only my portable Ps Vita...then if you want my money please make a port for this great portable console! Thanks

FDG, Thomas on :

We want as many people as possible to join the Monster Boy party so don't give up on possible Vita support. You can support us without money by recommending the game to friends who may own one of the first release platforms. Thank you and cheers!

Haz on :

Time to get a console upgrade my man.

Logbomb on :

Incredible screenshot, the game is looking so awesome.

I notice the boomerang has a bar underneath that says 22/30. Looking back at other screenshots I see a similar bar (without the numbers), but I always thought that was for how many of a spell (such as a fireball) you have left. However the boomerang comes back, and I doubt you get 22 of them. Does this mean we get to level up the boomerang and various spells?

I totally understand that porting costs money and takes time. Once the simultaneous PS4 and Xbone launch is an outstanding success, then I have no doubt many other platforms will follow.

We'll be on the PS blog on March 4 making some noise, don't worry about that. I can't remember ever being this worked up about a release of a game, I guess waiting over 20 years can do that to you ^_^

FDG, Thomas on :

Thank you! ^^ We're still modifying magic/extra attack on the go while balancing the game so don't put too much thought into numbers you're seeing now. However right now even the boomerang is limited to the amount you carry. Using it is currently more effective when you get out of its way so you can attack enemies on both sides of the screen (jump over the returning Boomerang). We also have a plan for upgrading magic to a more powerful level but right now the team is focusing on world and bosses tuning.

jj on :

Great screenshot. I particularly like the blue myrconid. Hope I spelt it correctly.

I'm glad you are taking the time necessary on Monster Boy.

Happy to support such a beloved project.

Radarapa on :

The important thing isn't that you get the game out as soon as possible, I'll gladly wait as long as you make sure the game is as good as you can possibly make it! Thanks for bringing back an awesome and sometime overlooked series!

FDG, Thomas on :

Thanks a lot JJ and Radarapa ^^

MENTD on :

It would make sense if the initial platforms you were releasing it on were not these overly expensive so-called "next gen" systems that
most retro players do not like, do not own and which only offer
slightly better graphics for the online FPS crowd.
This is a RETRO game but it's coming out for non retro systems,
do people who love online first person shooters even care?
More people own PS3/360 than PS4/Xbone anyhow so all it
looks like is yet another marketing scheme to try to get people
to buy a new game console. For an old school game.
It isn't going to happen. You'd make more money on the larger
audience, the audience who owns the older systems.

FDG, Thomas on :

Current Gen consoles are very close to the PC architecture so it's the logical first step to release on these platforms as we develop on PC and it's a Windows compatible game. The PC will see a release very soon as well. If the game doesn't sell well on these platforms - the same will happen on X360/PS3. We all hope for the best and we'd love to port the game to many platforms later.

Brent Parker on :

You should be saying that it will be released on PC first and foremost. When I read above that the release was going to be on Xbox and PS4 with no mention of the PC I was completely dumbfounded. I didn't even buy the last generation of consoles (360/ps3). I'm 32 and I don't know many other people my age who would actually buy a console over a PC these days unless they have kids, but if they have kids they usually just get a Nintendo console.

FDG,Thomas on :

Well it's not that easy, see - the PC Version needs extra care so we can check on different monitor, resolution, screen refreshment rates, controllers and keyboard + different graphics cards. Consoles is one setting, everyone has the same controller, hardware, etc.

Petter Lindh on :

Finally another update. Been looking forward for this one.
All I have to say is WOW. Never thought someone could create that magical atmosphere that the old Wonder Boy games did, and still do. Always believed in this game but now i KNOW. Really hope you'll find an audience for this game. As for me, I really think this will be my GOTY for 2016. Take all the time in the world as long as you bring me the best game since Dragon's Trap.
Need money? Release physical copies for PS Vita, 3DS, Wii U and NX. No matter the price, I'll buy them all and live happily ever after. :-D

FDG, Thomas on :

Thanks so much Petter! We'll keep giving our best - luckily we're independent team. To be honest, every investor would call us crazy to put so much time in it. But it's a love child and you don't explain it by numbers :-)

anubis on :

guys this game coming 2017 these guys are liars Thomas is the biggest liar

FDG, Thomas on :

You accidentally made a double post so I deleted one (almost) duplicate that included the word 'lazy'. I hope you understand that delaying a game is the opposite of lazy. All these people working full time on the game are 100% committed and they can't work for free as they have to pay their private bills as well. Sure, we could just release it, but would you be happy with a game that's left with much potential? We get new ideas while developing and instead of a feature freeze we try to implement some of them on the fly. It still won't make the perfect game because that probably doesn't exist except perhaps if you're Nintendo with an army of developers but it will make a quality game you'll enjoy. Even if it takes a while longer to wait.

Carl Charlbury on :

This is amazing! I am so excite! Thank you for making this, and thank you for taking the time to make it great! The way you're handling these ridiculous comments shows that you are all salt of the earth. These clowns do not represent your true fan base. Cant wait. Delays just mean a better, more polished game, and plenty of time to play the classics until release.

Maybe Dick on :

How about contacting Limited Run Games for a limited physical release?

If there was a possibility of a physical Vita cart of this game, I'd pay top dollar for that!

FDG, Thomas on :

We'll do that! It's a good idea.

Old Player on :

For Ps Vita port i ll pay in advance my copy!!!

Ed on :

Well done! monsterland is one of my all time arcade game favorites. I look forward to this.

Spidey981 on :

At first I was disappointed that the release date is still delayed. But if you still need time to refine, take. I'm looking forward to play this game, the few screenshot and gameplay video are incredible. I expect this game for 27 years, I just wait a few months. Can you give us an estimate of the selling price on PS4 and Xbox One. Thank you for all the work you have done until today

FDG, Thomas on :

Thank you Spidey! We're planning ~$20 (=$19.99 or so) as a selling price for Monster Boy.

Jonathan on :

I think the gaming houses should invest more in PC games: people can have different gaming platforms, but all possess a PC!

FDG, Thomas on :

Yes, the PC is an important platform - many people have some good hardware under their desk. Do you also have a Controller for your PC? We recently tested an alpha PC build of Monster Boy on a Laptop with Nvidia GPU and it ran smoothly 1080p/60fps. Once the game is finished it should run very well on various PC configurations even lower spec.

Jonathan on :

Yes, of course i have a controller for my PC! And, if necessary, my PC is very powerful, no problem!
And if the game supports only the keyboard, there are programs that emulate the keyboard with a compatible controller, like Xpadder!
We look forward to your progress, good job!

Spidey981 on :

Thomas thank you for your reply. I think $ 19.99 is really not expensive for all the work and all the time spent to create this game. For my part I am even ready to pay $ 29.99 because I think it's well deserved. I wish one thing is that the game meets a great success. I support you and thank you to realize a dream. A worthy sequel to Wonder Boy III The Dragon's Trap

Jason on :

It might be way off the mark but can you open up some kind of Kickstarter for porting costs? I mean, i'd pay £30 for this if it hit a Nintendo console.

FDG, Thomas on :

Kickstarter or other crowd funding platforms are certainly interesting for such a task but let's hope we don't need it :-)

Louie on :

Fair enough about the ports. I am still hoping for a Vita port, but I understand why it is not a priority for now. Hope the PS4 and Xbox One versions sell really well!

vlzvl on :

I'm sorry but the more polished Wonder boy becomes, sorry Monsterboy, the less i like it.
These retro games needs to be as retro as possible, what PS4$#$% ?
I respect your hard work though, just i expected to see a Wonderboy and instead im going to see Rayman.

FDG, Thomas on :

With 'as Retro as possible' do you mean pixel graphics ? Anyway - we're aware we need to earn your trust first which can only happen when the game is out. But we know very well how (especially gameplay wise) Monster Boy has to differ from a Rayman game to feel right and fun.

giga-ganon on :

Hello, those who backed flying hamster 2, are we still gonna get a copy for free? Don't worry, i'll offer my free copy to a friend and buy the game anyway, this game deserves all the money it can get!

FDG, Thomas on :

Yes, the PC version if you tweeted right after the announcement.

giga-ganon on :

Crap, i didn't see the conditions to be granted the free version! Can i still do it now?

FDG, Thomas on :

Sorry, but that's too late now as the content of the tweet has no supporting substance anymore (since the project changed to Monster Boy.)

Jose Montero on :

Hello and congratulations for the awesome game that you are developing! Is the most anticipated game for me right now. I backed flying hamster 2 because i see "the dragons trap" and "monster world" shadows there. After you offer this game free for backers I created a thread at forum and update it with information of the game. I send mails to the promotions starting 2015 when i see the offer of the game at the kickstarter update 14sorry and not use tweeter.
But i not received a response. I want to know if i enter the promotion to pre-order or not the game because i want to play it on release..i can´t wait more to play this.
Sorry forr my bad english and thanks for make one of muy childhood dream.

FDG, Thomas on :

Thank you Jose for your kind words and support. When Game Atelier cancelled the Kickstarter campaign, they posted 'update 12' in April 2014 with information how to enter the promotion to thank all 'theoretical' backers with a free Steam key. Twitter wasn't required. If you posted in a public forum it's valid too, but not if you posted a year later after our Monster Boy announcement.

Jose Montero on :

Lots of thanks for tour fast support and response Thomas. Really apreciated. Then i will pre-order it when posible At steam or Gog. Make the best game posible because my hype is At 106% . :-)

FDG, Thomas on :

Thank you for your continued support, Jose! ^_^

Gordman on :

Hey guys!

Many thanks for the new screenshot. Unbelievable that a former shop seller is a playable character in the new game. Pigs in video game are awesome! More awesome are living mushrooms in video games - like the Mushroom Spirit.. Toad.. or Shroomboom.. living mushrooms do rock! :-D I agree with others about the blue one, pretty good idea.

It´s understandable about the porting costs. Especially the Wii U, which is practically an underdog (which I own - my only ´next-gen´ console), needs much attention. I will recommend the game to everyone I can. But maybe it´s a good idea tu use a kickstarter campaign to get enough money for the ports? Yeah sure, not everybody likes kickstarter and other platforms, but it´s an option. I don´t know how I could support you more - I will never buy a Sony system again and I will never ever buy a Microsoft system.. ^,^

Thanks for all your efforts!

By the way, I have an idea for a great cutscene. I see Shion (he is the hero of the new game, isn´t he?) reaching a lookout, a cliff. He finds a praying woman who is sitting at the top of it. She is wearing a habit so you can´t see her face from the first moment. If Shion talks to her, she will be revealed as Asha, who could tell him about an old story from the past that is somewhat linked with the actual story of the game. I see her face right before my eyes while talking to Shion, looking at the horizon.

Kind regards from Germany,

FDG, Thomas on :

Thank you Gordman for sharing your thoughts and ideas! The hero in Monster Boy has a different name, though. But I'll keep your scene in mind - maybe for a sequel ? We'll see

Sergio on :

Ooohh!!! More waiting, not in the first half of 2016 :-( Still, it is one of the games I want to play most... I own a PSVita and a PS4, probably will play it on my PS4 in luxurious 720p/1080p.

Spidey981 on :

Hello to all the fans of Monster Boy. Like all the people who come on this blog, we look forward a release date. I know it still takes time but approximately how long are you going to announce a date? thank you

FDG, Thomas on :

We're going to announce a date when we are in beta and all features implemented. Also we don't know exactly how long QA time will be on PS4 and Xbox as they're going to be involved too and lastly we need to launch same day for both which needs further scheduling. See - it's not that easy especially because it's our first console release PS4/Xbox :-) We'll keep you updated on the blog

Jonas Lönnqvisy on :

Game looks better and better. Take your time.....I'm sure the results will be very good. I'll definitly buy this game!

FDG, Thomas on :

Thank you, Jonas! ^^

John on :

I'll buy......but for Vita!!!!!

Daniel on :

First of all thanks for making this game, i have been waiting for a new one for a long time. Spiritual successor or real doesn't matter (this is real though, just a new name).
Anyway, i saw in the new picture from the playstation blog that there is, what looks like a dragon, next to the normal form. Is it a new form, does it have wings? - My absolute favorite in wonder boy 3 was the bird... so, can you fly in this game? Would absolutely love it.

FDG, Thomas on :

Thank you Daniel - yes you'll be able to fly in the game!

Daniel on :

It's official then... it's my most anticipated game of the year :-D Great!

And sidenote, the frog gameplay looks absolutely amazing :-)

FDG, Thomas on :

Thanks, man - so glad you like it :-)

Jean on :

Don't you get it ...this game is better for a Wii U and 3DS's more suited for Nintendo than any thing else... so priority should be given to Wii U and 3DS not PS4 and Xbox One that are basically only for FPS and Team sports games...Action adventure, retro style and indies games are for Nintendo systems. If you port this game to any Nintendo systems I will get it...I grew up with Nintendo and Sega ...I loved the Wonder boy franchise and was looking forward for a new entry ... I am disappointed that it's not coming to Wii U/3DS at day one...And I am pretty sure I am not the only one.....

FDG, Thomas on :

I understand your disappointment, Jean. Sorry about that! It's just impossible for us to support another platform at launch. We don't have the budget to do that and put all the money we have left into polishing the actual game. Let's hope it does well and we'll push it to other platforms - I'd love a WiiU release with switching characters and equipment on the WiiU controller screen. Would be fantastic !

JasonRPG on :

I have posted on the PlayStation blog, I can not wait until I am playing it on PS4. Also, many gamers want this game on vita, if possible consider making a port for it sometime! I would love it on handheld as well. Good luck finishing the game!

FDG, Thomas on :

Thank you, Jason! We greatly appreciate the support. I would love to play it on handheld as well. Let's hope the game is doing well when it's out. cheers!

Colin on :

Can't wait, even if it only half delivers (which certainly doesn't look the case) it is going to be worth the wait!

andreas on :

this game will be day one purchase!
love the graphics and the feel of the old games = )

FDG, Thomas on :

Thanks a lot for supporting us with your hard earned money, Andreas and everybody who's joining the party on release day! :-)

108 Stars on :

I do have a PS4, but I would actually prefer a Vita version myself as well. :-) About PS4 and Xbox 360... anyone suggesting those would be better platforms is on the wrong track. Beside the PC architecture of PS4 and One, a big factor is that the last gen market is dying faster than anybody had expected. Other indies have also stated that from sales the logical choice is to got PS4, Vita and One.

BTW, one of the screenshots I saw on the PS Blog immediately reminded me of another forgotten Sega game... taken a bit of inspiration by any chance? :-)

FDG, Thomas on :

Yes, development on old platforms is very risky, also because it's totally different hardware and programming approach. PS4 and Xbox One are very close to PC so it's the logical choice to go there first. Luckily Game Atelier has experience on PS Vita so that'd be very possible as an upcoming port when the game does well. WiiU and the upcoming NX are both interesting for us.

Regarding the octopus boss - oh my the memories.. nice screenshot :-) Well - I think if so it's more from an unconscious mind than from a planned inspiration in that case.

FL on :

Man, this project is TOO awesome! Your company deserves the great feedback on PlayStation Blog!

I played de Dragon's Trap more than twenty years ago! This game is very important to me. This one was the first game that I played that have passwords. All other are small games that can be beated in a single day.

I had played several fangames (Wonder Boy Legendary World, Dragon's Curse Remake, Monster World RPG), but your game ascended into the release that revive the series, congratulations!

I gonna wish something: Please, PLEASE put a hard mode! This is a feature very easy to do that enriches A LOT the experience for veteran players!

Logbomb on :

I like the idea of a hard mode too.

FDG, Thomas on :

Thank you FL, great to hear from another Dragon's Trap Veteran! Optional Hard Mode sounds like a good idea because you know - you can't make games nowadays as hard as they were in the past. People would just not finish them and get frustrated quickly. We hope that many people enjoy and finish Monster Boy and watch the ending. I'll keep Hard Mode Option on my radar to look into when we finished main gameplay.

FL on :

Thanks for the answer!

If, after finishing the main gameplay you run out of time/resources, consider, at least, making a simple Hard Mode that just multiply the damage received by something between 125%-200%. This is ridiculous fast to code and, in terms of game design, just someone who finish the game in this mode is enough to validade it.

MajorWeirdo on :

I did not hear about this game until I saw the post on Playstation Blog this week!

I'm impressed by what I've seen about this title so far! Great stuff!

This really is a Wonder Boy revival with serious hints to the best title in the series, Dragon's Trap!

Great work to all of you.

I'm seriously looking forward to a release date now.

Keep up the great work.

FDG, Thomas on :

Thank you so much MajorWeirdo! :-D

Zell on :

I cannot wait to get my hand on this and absolutely ganna pre-order it as soon as it pops-up on the PS4, thanks guys for developing this game.

It would be really nice if there were a multiplayer in this one. It might be too late to implement this now. Still. Keep up the good word :-D

FDG, Thomas on :

Thanks a lot Zell! Yes, we have been thinking about Multiplayer but ultimately decided to put all our time into the single player game and focus on that. We thought we could work on Multiplayer features as the last step when we finished the game but it turned out we spend more and more time to polish the main game and get the best result from that.

Spidey981 on :

Hello everyone. I ask myself some questions. the first, is that the game will be translated into French, Italian, Spanish, German etc ...? Second question: do you create avatars for PS4 and Xbox account? a picture of the hero and the different animals will be great as avatar. thank you, we are all with you to give you the strength to finish this wonderful game.

FDG, Thomas on :

Hi Spidey, yes the game will be text-translated to German, Spanish, French, Italian, Russian, Brazilian Portuguese and Japanese.
The avatar idea is great!

Spidey981 on :

Thank you for answering. Translating make the game fun to play even more. For account PS4 and Xbox avatars that will be great. The title logo will make a perfect avatar.

Tom on :

Pleas take all the time you need to make the game a worthy successor to the Wonderboy franchise.
I have a lot of emotional investment in this series. I have so many fond memories of playing through the Dragon's Trap and MWIV with my brother, who passed away recently and although we won't get to play Monster Boy together, please know he was rooting for you guys to make a great game.

FDG, Thomas on :

It makes me sad to hear about the recent passing of your brother, but I'm glad you have fond memories of playing Monster World together. You both had a great time for sure, and we hope to bring back some of the magic that you experienced together. On a sidenote: Monster Boy has a younger brother who appears in the game sometimes - I believe this gives the game a nice touch of experiencing a quest as a team. I like the idea of taking your brother with you for another quality time together. Thank you for sharing your story and we'll give our best to make it a worthwhile experience ^_^

Rangarig Rex on :

Guys, please don't blow this.

I have been enthusiastic about this game ever since it was called Flying Hamster II, and I am really looking forward to it.

You have to realize that consoles have become FPS boxes, so going there FIRST to pay for porting to the PC will likely be a bad idea.

I have been pondering getting a ps4 but there are simply no games for it that I would want.

Yes, Monster boy would be the first I would feel enthusiastic about, but... its not worth 400 quid to me, sorry.

Would hate to see this die due to bad marketing decisions.

FDG, Thomas on :

Don't worry about the PC Version, it will come for sure and doesn't need funding from console revenues. We just can't handle all releases at the same time because our team is too small.

Mw3 fan on :

Shame I only have nintendo consoles. Not buying a xbox/Ps4 for 1 game :-|

MajorWeirdo on :

when will we get an update on Monsterboy?

It has been too long.. :-D

moon on :

Mmmmm PlayStation VITA version please!

William Souza on :

So, we already have a remastered version of "The Danger Zone" and "Monster-Town". Will we also have one for "The Monster's Lair"? Please say yes, please!

FDG, Thomas on :

Yes! :-)

William Souza on :

Zell on :

Regarding the length of the gameply , what is the approximate length in hours for it?

for example, game play length for:
Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap as 15.6 hours (53 votes)
Monster World IV = 13.6 Hours (18 votes)
(data from GameFAQs)

I hope this is a spoiler free.

Thanks & Regards,

FDG, Thomas on :

We're aiming around 10+ hours, depending on how fast you play. The world is quite big, but you play it faster than classic Monster World games as there's a bit less enemy encounter and slower respawn.

Zell on :

Thanks for this answering, I'll try to enjoy every minute of it aiming to make it 20+ ;-)

I've been waiting for more than 15 years for such title to come.

I do still remember in my childhood writing down various codes of my game including "WE5T 0NE 0000 000" in various pages / notes daydreaming about this game never knowing why such word "west one" was chosen, until recently when I visited PSN site on March and heard about your site and the team who created this game and I am glade that you posted this on PSN site. (or maybe not as I am being tortured everyday waiting for it to be released ASAP).

I won't mind for another couple dozens of episodes or DLCs in the future ;-)

well, thanks and best regards for all the efforts.

FDG, Thomas on :

Thanks so much, Zell. I'm glad to hear that you're looking forward to the release of Monster Boy. I remember too well how it was common to write down passwords and find cheat passcodes in print magazines. :-) It was such an exciting time - we are not going to bring back password saving, but we hope to bring back some awesome gameplay and memories from the golden days of cartridge gaming.

Logbomb on :

It is probably another good reason for having a hard mode option available from the beginning, so that those who want to spend more time playing the game can be indulged. I like the idea of it being available from the beginning, as opposed to many of the Zelda games which have a harder hero mode that can be unlocked once you finish the normal game. The normal game just becomes one big spoiler for those who actually want to play it in a harder mode. I have always wished you could chose hero mode to begin with in Zelda.

Dragon's Trap being 15 hours long is only because in the first play through people died a lot and wandered around finding out where to go next. Really Dragon's Trap only has about 4 hours worth of game play at the most, once you know what you are doing, and I am sure that Monster Boy is going to have a lot more game play than that and will be a much bigger world in comparison to Dragon's Trap.

FDG, Thomas on :

We're still balancing Normal Mode but will try to implement a Hard Mode too. It's a considered feature that would become available right from the beginning.

abelenki on :

will Monster Boy get physical release for PC platform (box and disc)?

FDG, Thomas on :

Not for launch and no promises but we are considering a Limited Edition Disc for a small group of people. Let me know what you'd like to see in such a limited edition release - ideas welcome :-)

abelenki on :

i just want to have a hard copy, as i already have for my favorite games.

it's up to developer to decide what's inside a box - disc, instructions, comics, magnets, figures (and the list goes on)...

Spidey981 on :

hello, I hope we will have news about the progress of the game for around 26 March. thank you

Spidey981 on :

Hello everyone. I do not know if the question has already been asked but I'd like to know if there will be trophies and especially platinum? thank you

FDG, Thomas on :

Hi Spidey - yes we'll have trophies in the game. Also Platinum

RaidenDX on :

Thank you for bringing back Wonder Boy, one of my favorite games. Please don't make the limited edition too limited. I don't want look for the Limited Edtion on eBay and help out a scalper. How about a physical Wonder Boy collection? All the older Wonder Boy games on one disc.

abelenki on :

> How about a physical Wonder Boy collection? All the older Wonder
> Boy games on one disc

FDG, Thomas on :

Unfortunately we don't have licenses to publish the classic games so we can't publish a compilation with all Wonder Boy Games

Spidey981 on :

Hi everybody. At this address the new screenshot , the details on the gameplay and especially details about the story. WARNING ! Spoiler Alert

Jared on :

I just wanted to ask if this game will have a physical copy (like at GameStop) or a download for PSN?

FDG, Thomas on :

Hi Jared!

The game will release digital only at first but we plan to make a limited run physical copy release later. Please stay tuned.

Daniel Horvath on :

A limited run?
As in ... Limited Run Games? :-D

FDG, Thomas on :

Yes that one ^^
